The EuroAfrica Interconnector enjoys a high rating by the European Union, falls within the EU energy policy and contributes to the following energy targets: It creates a reliable alternative route for the transfer of electric energy to and from Europe. The project is an energy highway bridging Africa and Europe, with a total length of 1396 km. The EuroAfrica Interconnector comprises the electricity interconnection between the grids of Egypt, Cyprus and Greece (Europe) through a subsea DC cable and with HVDC onshore converter stations at each connection point, with a total capacity of 2000MW. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Alexis Tsipras, in their Joint Declaration following the 5th Cyprus – Egypt – Greece Trilateral Summit in Nicosia on November 21, 2017, expressed their firm commitment to enhance trilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and welcomed the 2,000MW EuroAfrica Interconnector for energy security and supply. In this regard, the joint declaration by the three leaders said, “they recognised the importance of establishing an electrical grid between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece, such as the framework agreement between the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and the Euro Africa Interconnector Company on. The President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis, issued a joint declaration at the conclusion of the 7th Trilateral Summit, held in Cairo on October 8, 2019, expressed their desire to continue strengthening their cooperation in matters of energy. The EuroAfrica Interconnector is an “electricity highway” connecting the national electricity grids of Egypt, Cyprus and Greece through a 1396 km subsea HVDC cable. The EuroAfrica Interconnector is the official project developer of the 2,000MW electricity interconnector between Egypt, Cyprus, Greece and Europe.
